MU Water at a Glance

Serving Morristown and Surrounding Areas

The Morristown Utilities Commission (MU) Water Department is a regional system which serves water to the City of Morristown, with a vibrant industrial economy, and three (3) surrounding utility districts that spread into Hamblen, Grainger, and Jefferson Counties.

ISO Rating

The City of Morristown currently has an Insurance Service Organization (ISO) rating of 2 with 1 being the highest and 10 the lowest ranking. Forty percent (40%) of the classification is based upon the MU Water Distribution System capacity. MU Water Department strives to maintain the highest water quality standards and lowest operating expenses while providing one of East Tennessee’s lowest water rates.

Reliable Water Quality

Water quality and production are monitored 24 hours a day seven days a week with a state of the art Supervisory, Control, and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Computer System. Our current water distribution system has approximately 300 miles of pipe, 14 water storage reservoirs, and 9 pump stations placed throughout the City of Morristown. Furthermore, MU filters water through a nine-foot bed of Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) reducing organic compounds causing odor and disinfection by-products. GAC filtration also greatly reduces levels of pharmaceuticals and PFAS/polyfluoroalkyl substances.

Capacity

MU has one water treatment plant capacity of 24 million gallons per day (MGD).

Peak Day Production

Currently, peak day production is approaching 13 million gallons of water per day (MGD) and an average daily production of approximately 10 MGD with approximately half of the production sold to the surrounding utility districts.

Capacity Data

A Facility Investment Charge of $0.23/per thousand gallons usage shall be applied to recover the debt service expense associated with the cost of increasing capacity of the Water Treatment Plant. This charge is determined by dividing the projected annual debt service by the actual sales gallons for the previous fiscal year.
