General Information
At MU, we strive to have the lowest rates possible for Morristown’s residents and businesses. MU is billed by TVA on a time-of-use basis meaning that our rates are based on when the power is used during the day. Certain times are more expensive than others and these are called onpeak and offpeak hours. With exception of some large industrial customers, MU does not bill our customers based on time-of-use. However, it is still very helpful to keep rates low if we can strive to move unnecessary usage to offpeak times, such as washing and drying clothes, operating dishwashers, and even showers! MU’s peak times are defined as such:
Onpeak hours:
- 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. during the months of April, May, June, July, Aug., Sept., & Oct.
- 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. during the months of Jan., Feb., March, Nov., & Dec.
(excludes weekends & Federal holidays: Memorial, Independence, Labor, Thanksgiving and Christmas days which are considered offpeak)
Residential Power Rate Information
Availability
This rate shall apply only to electric service to a single-family dwelling (including its appurtenances if served through the same meter), where the major use of electricity is for domestic purposes such as lighting, household appliances, and the personal comfort and convenience of those residing therein. For more information on this rate, the full 2020 rate schedule can be downloaded here which is still valid as there were no increases by MU since. Click Forecast to view the estimated 2024 forecast as well as the previous 12 months of residential rate.
The base energy rate changes with each season as defined below:
- Summer: June, July, August, September
- Transition: April, May, October, November
- Winter: December, January, February, March
Please note: At this time MU does not have time of use rates. The seasons defined above are for the base rate, which does not include all charges or credits. If you are trying to program an energy management device or smart thermostat, please note that the rate changes monthly based on fuel but there is no difference to the residential rate between ON-peak and OFF-peak. For instance in the summer, a kWh of electricity costs the same at 3 PM as it does at 3 am. It is recommended to use an average rate in these devices. You can find the yearly forecast and actual on the (Forecast) link above.

Additionally, the base rates in the General Power Rates Schedules PDF do not include the current TVA rate adjustments that is added to the base. Again, this is a pass through charge and can vary each year. The base energy rate column below contains all yearly fixed charges pertaining to the current season. the only monthly variable is the fuel cost. Click GSA Forecast to view the 2024 forecast as well as the last 12 month rates.

Base: This remains the same per season every year that there is no cost increase or decrease imposed by MU.
Adjust: This can vary per season each year if TVA imposes a cost increase or decrease to MU. Strictly a pass through cost by MU.
Hydro: This is a TVA imposed cost that can increase or decrease each year. .
